The deadline for the registration of lectures was 30 June. Registered lectures for the conference come from 12 countries. On the first day of the 61st IFC, on 16 September, the ten plenary lectures will be introduced, while the next day, the rest of the 36 lectures will be outlined in three distinct sections and in the form of posters. The contents and timeline of the lecture programme of the Conference will be published by the end of July at the website of the Slovenian Foundrymen Society.

There are still a few spots available for exhibitors at this year’s IFC in Portoroz. Just like in previous years, registrations for exhibitors conclude at the end of July. The expected or maximum number of exhibitors is limited at approx. 40. The registration deadline for other participants, who wish to participate in the Conference and exhibition as visitors and spectators, is 10 September 2021.

On the night before the opening of the 61st IFC, on 15 September, the traditional meet-and-greet for Conference and exhibition participants will be held in the ancient coastal town of Piran. After the first working day, on 16 September, a foundrymen’s night on the coast in Portorož follows.

After a difficult year of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors will have a series of excellent opportunities to connect with other professionals from the sector, which was sorely missed during the previous year. As the organizer of the international foundry event, the Slovenian Foundrymen Society will be responsible for making certain that Portoroz retains its reputation as a prestigious location for professional gatherings and for the quality organization of one of the largest international foundry events in this part of Europe.

IM MEMORIAM, dipl. ing. Erich Nechtelberger

In the last week of September, honorary member of Slovenian foundrymen Society, dipl. eng. Erich Nechtelberger, lost the battle to an illness of many years. He was our valued colleague, big foundryman by knowledge and foundry belonging, our long-time friend and a regular participant of the foundry conference in Portoroz.

In January this year, he celebrated his 83rd birthday. We will recap the most important milestones from his rich biography.

After studying metallurgy at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, he was hired as an assistant in the experimental foundry of Austrian Institute in Leoben in 1962. In 1979 he was appointed for the deputy head of the Institute and in 1983 a director of practical foundry research, as well as director of the Austrian Foundry Research Institute. Since 1989, when he retired, he has been leading a Mining Professions Counseling of the Republic of Austria. In 2001, he accepted the position of Managing Director of the Association of Austrian Foundrymen and in 2002 he took over as the editor of main Austrian foundry journal "Giesserei-Rundschau”.

He has been a member of Slovenian foundrymen Society since 1960, and with a few spaces, regular participant of our traditional foundry event in Portoroz. By the Society authorities’ agreement, he was named an honorary member of Slovenian foundrymen Society, and was this year a winner of Slovenian foundrymen Society's medal, at the 60th jubilee of international foundry conference in Slovenia. At his absence, the members of OGI-Austrian foundry institute, dipl. eng. Gerhard Schindelbacher and prof. Peter Schumacher, accepted the medal in his name.

Since 1965 onwards, Erich Nechtelberger is also a member of German Foundry Association. For special merits in the foundry, he in 2010 received Bernhard-Osann medal of VDG- German Foundry Association. For many years of his work, the forefront was cast iron and cast iron with vermicular graphite.

My acquaintanceship and business collaboration with Erich Nechtelberger goes back to the 1970s. The connection deepened in the last 15 years of my leading of Slovenian foundrymen Society. We were meeting very often, on all kinds of foundry events around the world and continuously exchange important professional information, and mutually help each other with evaluations, perspectives and other needed solutions in given moments. In every moment, he was ready to take time and listen to the problems, ideas and dilemmas. Erich was by nature very calm and wise, and most importantly reliable and a good person.

We will gladly remember him and take from his rich treasury of good ideas and solutions and experiences, that are still valuable and precious. In the name of Slovenian foundrymen Society and my name, dear Erich, I thank you for an important contribution to the constant growth of foundry in Austria, Slovenia and around the world, that you have been investing in, during your entire, very active life.
